The Nighttime Hair Routine That Saves Your Install
Here's a truth bomb: Your nighttime routine is MORE important than your morning routine when it comes to hair extensions. What you do before bed determines whether you wake up looking like a goddess or a bird's nest.
Why Cotton is Your Hair's Enemy
That standard cotton pillowcase on your bed? It's draining the life from your extensions. Cotton is highly absorbent - it literally sucks the moisture out of your hair while you sleep. Add friction from tossing and turning, and you have the perfect recipe for tangled, dry, matted hair.
The "Melt Band" Myth
Wearing a melt band to sleep is NOT protecting your hair. It only protects your edges. The rest of your wig is still rubbing against cotton all night. You need full coverage with a bonnet or scarf.
The 5-Minute Nighttime Routine
Step 1: Gentle Detangle (2 minutes)
Use a wide-tooth comb or a special "wet brush" to gently detangle from the ends up. Never rip through knots - hold the hair above the tangle and work through it slowly.
Step 2: Moisturize the Ends (30 seconds)
Spritz your ends with a leave-in conditioner or a water/conditioner mix. The ends are the oldest and driest part of the hair - they need the most attention.
Step 3: Secure the Hair (1 minute)
How you secure depends on your texture:
- Straight/Body Wave: Wrap the hair around your head and pin it, or create a loose low ponytail
- Curly/Deep Wave: Use the "pineapple" method - gather all your hair loosely at the very top of your head with a silk scrunchie
The Pineapple Method
This technique preserves curls and volume by keeping the hair off your back and neck. When you wake up and release the pineapple, your curls fall perfectly into place with minimal fluffing needed.
Step 4: Cover with Satin/Silk (30 seconds)
Put on a large satin bonnet that fully covers all your hair, OR tie a silk scarf around your head. If bonnets fall off in your sleep, invest in a satin pillowcase as backup.
Step 5: Morning Refresh (1 minute)
When you wake up, remove your bonnet/scarf and let your hair fall. Spritz lightly with water or a refresh spray, scrunch if curly, and shake out. You're ready to go!
